These fellers were a challenge. The deal was to make a pair of
statues to flank a doorway on the set of the "batman-Mr.Freeze stunt show"
at M-Mt..The gag is that Mr. Freeze shoots one of them with his "freeze"
ray, causing it to become so brittle that he can go over and "break" it
off with his bare hands, and toss it on the floor. This can cause a lot
of wear on a prop if it's done three times a day. Ergo, this was to be
an engineering challenge as much as an artistic one. The "rigid" figure
was sculpted out of foam first, fiberglassed & sanded. Then we blanket
molded it to use for making the "break-away" figure. We fashioned a dam
were the fissure would be dividing the piece, and made the lower part of
stout fiberglas. then we experimented with several materials for the upper
piece, before using urethane rubber for the shell over a foam filled, aluminium
reinforced interior. It works fine.
